Red Cloud was born close to the forks of the Platte River, near the modern-day city of North Platte, Nebraska. Lauren Winfield Aldrich was born in 1848 in Boone County, Illinois. He enlisted in the army in 1867 and served as a corporal in the United States Army 30th Infantry Regiment, Company A, and as a sergeant in the 4th Infantry Regiment, Company H. His military duties were to protect the construction crews of the Union Pacific Railroad.
